The first day of school was kicked off with a powhiri, which welcomed a lot of new students. Three of these students who were welcomed are student destined for our class, their names are Aroha, Te Arani and Ronaldo.
Lizzie and I were the kaikaranga. I was a bit nervous at the start. All the manuhiri shook hands with the tamariki and kaiako, then Josemiria started off the karakia "piko o koutou matinga" she proudly spoke.

Matua Mitai began a long speech which supported the manuhiri and thanked our school for a warm welcome. When Matua Mitai finished his speech the manuhiri supported him with a wonderful waiata.
I was proud to be a kaikaranga for the first time, welcoming new students into our school but I felt doubly proud for having the opportunity to welcome three new students which were in our class.

"Haere mai! Haere mai! Haere mai ra!" Chanted Jessie and Lizzy. We gathered in the library for this special moment, a powhiri on the first day of school, getting us all ready for the year and setting the kaupapa, whanaungatanga. As the manuhiri shook our hands we greeted them with words like 'tena koe or kia ora.'

After that, Josemiria started the karakia. "piko koutou matenga, kapio koutou kanohi, me inoi tatou." We chanted the karakia. It was almost time for me to mihi. It felt like my heart skipped a beat I had butterflys in my stomach, I was very nervous. as I spoke my mihi. I mucked up by pronouncing a word wrong and I didn't know what to do, so I just carried on.

Uncle Mitai spoke the mihi to support the manuhiri. Uncle Mitai's speech or mihi was pretty long, and I nearly fell asleep as a result. After he had finished the manuhiri sang a little song. Mrs Lindsay introduced the manuhiri, then suddenly Ronaldo walked in with his sister Whaea Gaylene. She also introduced her brother to the school.

Three new students are in my class Aroha, Te Arani and Ronaldo. Ronaldo is my friend now, we play a lot of Master or Champion. I hope the new students have a great time at Tautoro School.
